"Form Voltron!". Whether you were introduced to the original 80's version or the DreamWorks version, those two words instantly bring up images of giant robotic lions and the brave paladins that pilot them. My department helped Voltron: Legendary Defender get through the Post Production animation retake process which involved finessing animation, updating artwork or redoing shots from scratch. The quality of the show is superb and that is a testament to Executive Producers Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery, writer Tim Hendricks, the production team and Studio Mir. The show not only looks amazing but the story is full of drama, heart, humor and action.
To keep the fans engaged in between Netflix seasons DreamWorks produced additional content that plays on YouTube. Some of that content was a series of motion comics that was done by my group and directed by me. The first challenge with this project was the lack of any timing or editorial reference. We were animating and building the edit all at the same time. The second challenge is that the layout of the comic book artwork was not always easy to fit in video space. We had to be creative with our camera moves and layout to tell the story that was in the comic book but in video. All in all I enjoyed the experience and am really happy with how they turned out.
